Free Event: Horror Comics & Censorship in Australia - Friday 16 July 2010 (Melbourne)

I will be presenting a free public lecture, 'A Design for Depravity: Horror Comics and the Challenge of Censorship in Australia, 1950-1986', on 7:00pm, Friday 16 July 2010, at The Wheeler Centre, 176 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.

My talk will trace the often controversial history of horror comic book publishing in Australia, and the efforts of state and federal governments to supress horror comics since the 1950s, as part of broader political campaigns waged against 'objectionable literature'. The talk will be accompanied by a suitably lurid visual presentation!

This lecture is being delivered as part of the Bibliographic Society of Australia & New Zealand (BSANZ) Conference 2010, and is open to the general public. Admittance is free, but bookings are essential - you can book tickets for this event online at The Wheeler Centre.

Hi Kev!

Wish I could go! Sounds like a lot of fun!

Will you be mentioning the infamous "Phantastique" by Steve Carter and co.? Banned by the NSW govt. and nasty enough to have Rev. Fred Nile's nads in a twist?

Hi Gary

Good to hear from you, stranger! Yes, indeed, Phantastique will be discussed at length in my presentation, which did suffer a chequered censorship history in Australia. It was denounced in the NSW parliament, but wasn't banned from that state, though - for the details, you'll have to just turn up on the night! (Though I suspect that might not be easy, given your present locale???)

Dang! Wish I could have made it, but, as usual, I saw this too late.

I trust you mentioned the mighty Gredown line.

Hi Kevin, what a great blog. Discovered it today while searching for the name "Desert Head", which just popped into my head for no reason. (I just had to remember who he was. Thank God for the internet!)

You've got me. I'm subscribing via RSS.
